On your calendar, it says we will be working on "The Idylls of the King" next week. I have decided to not do that, as I want to give you a bit of a break from reading. Instead, you will have Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday to work on your archetype project in class. The final product will be due by the end of class on Wednesday. Anything after that, and it will be late! If you are done with your project, you may use those days as reading days. :)

IMK 26-32 by Wednesday! Archetypes Project Due April 6th The STAAR test is Tuesday, March 29. I feel that you will all do fine provided you do well in my class. Remember, the STAAR test is for everyone, not just PreAP students, so the standard is a little lower than what you are accustomed to. That being said, if you feel like you would benefit from additional guidance and practice, please check your online textbook via MyKatyCloud. Once you are in your textbook, click on any unit in the book and then click on assessments. There should be some that say STAAR or EOC assessment. These are excellent resources! I would also recommend looking at released STAAR tests on the TEA website, found here: http://tea.texas.gov/student.assessment/staar/writing/ Scroll to English I and then click on the items for March 2015. The STAAR was reformatted, and it would be best to look at only the most recent released exam (from last year).
I will have some reminders to go over with you on Monday, but if you have any additional questions, that would be a good time for them. You may also email me your questions over the weekend, and I will try to get back to you ASAP. Here is a practice with the short answer selection from the STAAR test, as well as the key. Hopefully it will help you realize what is a solid response and what still needs some work. Short Answer Practice Short Answer Practice KEY For the short answer section, you MUST include quotes from the story/poem the prompt is asking you about. A good rule of thumb is to have at least two quotes from each piece. You also need to make sure you are clearly answering the prompt. So if the prompt is "Do you believe that Ashley is a good friend?" your thesis for the short answer can be something along the lines of "Because she always sticks up for those she cares about, Ashley is a good friend." Then you would include at least two quotes (again, actual quotes, not just examples) and explain how those quotes prove that Ashley is a good friend. Do not try to take both sides. Choose one or the other, whichever is easier for you to write about. Remember that the STAAR essay is graded on a scale of 0-4 by two different graders. Their scores are added together for your final score. This is NOT a literary analysis like we typically do in class. This is an expository essay where you use multiple examples to explain your thesis. Make sure your thesis answers the question and then use at least two of the following to expand into body paragraphs with evidence (this is NOT quoted material): example from literature, example from current events, example from history, example from your own personal experience. You only get 26 lines to write this essay, so keep your writing small (but legible!) and be concise. The multiple choice part should be easy (significantly easier than what we do in class). There will be revising and editing, so be prepared for that. Again, if you have any questions, either email me or ask me in class on Monday. You're all going to do fine! I have faith in you! :) Today: TOAFK ICTW Homework:
